Dreams

A dream like image of a boat on water in the background, with a golden eagle flying and a vintage car being driven by 3 men in red and white blazers hovering over the water!

The Bible clearly shows that God speaks to us through our dreams. When we are asleep our mind is normally at rest. It is not full of the many things which pre-occupy us during the day. God can speak to our spirit clearly when our conscious mind is not as active.

Job 33:15-16 “ In a dream, a vision of the night, when sound sleep falls on men, while they slumber in their beds, then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction, that He may turn aside from his conduct, and keep man from pride.

I personally always trust that the dreams which come during sound sleep are sent by God. The Bible seems to suggest that there are other types of dreams, such as those caused by stress.

Ecc 5:3 (NIV) “As a dream comes when there are many cares, so is the speech of a fool when there are many words.”

I tend to be more cautious about dreams that I receive when I have many cares and my sleep is not sound, as it seems to be at those times that my own thoughts and other influences can affect my dreams.

Dreams, like visions vary from vague snatches to bold and direct dreams. A good habit to get into is to keep a pen and paper by your bed. When you wake with a dream, ask God to help you remember it. Write it down straight away, otherwise like the morning mist, it may quickly disappear.

Some dreams are warnings. Joseph had a dream telling him to take Mary and Jesus and flee to Egypt Mt 2:13-15. Some dreams are sent to instruct us on a path to follow. When it was safe to go back Joseph received another dream Mt. 2:19 telling him to return. The Magi were warned in a dream not to return home via Jerusalem Mt 2:12. Some dreams foretell the future. The dreams of Joseph and Daniel are good examples of these.

A vivid example of a warning dream happened to me before I became a Christian. I used to travel during work with a colleague who was a rally driver in her spare time. The trouble was that she drove her powerful car in the same way! I had a dream one night in which we turned around a bend and hit something red and had a bad accident. The next day I related this to my friend as we approached the spot, suggesting that we slow down! She reluctantly did so, and as we turned the bend, a red van pulled out of a side road straight into our path. My friend, who had been covering the brakes just in case, hit the brakes and we stopped inches short of the van. We stared at each other in disbelief and it was only later, when I became a Christian, I realised that God had warned us and prevented a nasty accident.

Many dreams come in parable or riddle form and need interpretation from God.
A Bible concordance is a good place to look up the symbolism contained in dreams. For modern symbols with no Bible equivalent, the internet is a great resource for researching your dreams. Each time the Lord has given me insight into what my dreams mean as I searched for it – often quite literally a google or yahoo search. It is like going on a spiritual treasure hunt!
